Seoul: Kpop-filled Trip – Part 4 (Going to BIGHIT ENTERTAINMENT + side trip to Myeongdong)

January 29, 2015 (A Continuation) -I became a fan of BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan just recently and the last time I went to Korea (April 2014) I didn’t go to Big Hit’s Building. But this time I didn’t pass up the chance. This was the highlight of my day because it’s going to be my first time going there and I’m a huge fan of BTS now – wishing that I’ll be seeing them again (was able to be meet them last December 7, 2014 at the The Red Bullet II in Manila).

After going to the other Entertainment Agencies (Here’s a link of my blog: https://wanderlustyeoja.wordpress.com/2015/03/13/seoul-kpop-filled-trip-part-3-going-around-entertainment-companies/) I find my way to Sinsa Station Line 3 which is the nearest Subway station to Big Hit.

Location Map of Big Hit (Pink Circle). From Sinsa Station, go out at Exit 1 and just go straight once you get out. On the 5th street, turn Right.

Just walk straight and on the 3rd road, Turn Left. The road is uphill again (most of the streets I walked at here in Seoul were so tiring – it’s all going up. A cardio workout for me to shed all the calories I ate in this vacation. Whew.

The ambiance of the neighborhood was somehow different from that of SM Entertainment’s location. Maybe because there were no trees just buildings and houses unlike at SM’s location where there were more trees – a refreshing feel. But I enjoyed my stroll here as well thinking that BTS have walked this streets as well.

I was alone at that time. But after a few minutes 2 teenage girls (younger than me) arrived and were also there to see Bangtan. We talked and waited for quite a while both wishing that Bangtan will show up any time. 1 of them is a fan but the other is not. She just accompanied her friend who came from the province to visit here at BigHit. The fan is a Jungkook fan. But after about 15 minutes they bid “Annyeonghi Kyeseyo Eonnie” to me ’cause they can no longer stand the coldness anymore.

I manage to enter the building but not past the Big Hit Office (I’m not THAT snoopy).

11

I tried to take peek inside this glass doors but I guess Bangtan was not there (because they had an event last night – The 4th Gaon Chart Kpop Awards - prior to this day and maybe they were resting at their dorm).

I only managed to see 2 girls (maybe back-up dancers or make-up/stylists noonas). The boys were only in my imagination — beyond these doors is where they first started and continued to become great at what they do. Yey Bangtan ❤

After going to BIG HIT ENTERTAINMENT I decided to just go to MYEONGDONG to buy gifts, make-up and most importantly, KPOP ALBUMS and MERCHANDISES!

It’s been a while Myeongdong (my 2nd favorite place in Seoul – cause of the numerous Make-up store!) And outside of the subway station exit you’ll find this cute waiting shade --- Princess Hours - my favorite KDrama ever <3

It’s already 5 pm KST and I haven’t eaten my lunch. So I just decided to eat at McDonald’s (I have a thing that when I go on a vacation abroad I always eat at fast food chains just to compare the taste of the food back home).

Mcdonald’s menu. The calories per food are indicated. I guess Koreans really are weight conscious.

I ordered a Shanghai Burger Set which costs 5,500 won or 216 Php. But I only managed to eat the fries and took home the burger instead. I was so full!

While enjoying my lunch/dinner I suddenly saw this bus that still has the picture of Luhan and Kris on it. I miss them T_T (almost choked and seriously teared up when I saw this).

19

After eating I went down to the Myeongdong Underground Shopping Center and hoarded Kpop Albums 🙂 was in heaven at that time (plus it’s really warm there that’s why I stayed a bit longer). Then I went out again at the shopping street of Myeongdong to buy make-ups, YIPEEEEEEE!

Myeongdong has lots of shops (local to foreign brands) – lit-up signages are a pretty interesting sight.

There are many foreigners here. More than the local people. Our ski tour guide mentioned to us that these days Myeongdong is not a popular hangout place anymore for locals because it became a tourist spot and prices in the restaurants became expensive.

After I have bought all the things on my shopping list I went home. I was so tired from all the walking that I did but at the same time I was happy to be able to visit various places connected with Kpop.

It’s a waste that I wasn’t able to go to Viva Polo Restaurant (Chanyeol’s Mom’s Italian Restaurant) because it’s sooooooooooo far away from the places that I went. But I’ll surely go there next time that I visit South Korea – I also need to visit Jellyfish and WM Entertainment next time.

Until here,

Seoul: Kpop-filled Trip (Part 3 – Going Around Entertainment Companies

January 29, 2015 (A continuation) – I was determined to go to the places that I planned to visit for the day that even though my feet were screaming out of pain I just go on with my adventure.

Next Stop –>  SM Entertainment, FNC Entertainment, JYP, Cube

First I went to SM Entertainment. From COEX Atrium/ Samseong Station Line 2 or Green Line I travelled to Apgujeong Rodeo Station.

The atmosphere in this station is very different. A Rich, Elite-kind of atmosphere. You can totally tell that you’re in a rich part of the city 😀

This is what you’ll see once you get out of the station.

Just walk straight once you get of the Subway Station Exit. Once you see the old SM Entertainment Building (I don’t have a picture of it but I’m sure you’ll not miss it because usually it has a huge tarpaulin of SME artists that has a new album --- at that time it was Red Velvet)

The streets are clear — not much people around. Just one Halmoni (Grandmother) walking in front of me. I was just observing her and enjoying my time strolling in this quiet neighborhood. It’s about a 10-minute walk going to SME. Not much to see on the way but houses, little buildings and schools. It was an uphill climb but I didn’t feel tired because it’s cold and even though it’s 2:00 in the afternoon, it’s a bit cloudy.

Annyeong Haseyo Halmoni!

Once you reach the end of the road, Turn Right and just keep walking straight.

No cars, no fans — meaning no idols inside — or it’s just my theory. But it was really quiet. Unlike the last time that I went there, it was packed with fans (and we can hear music coming from the building-seems like there’s someone rehearsing).

After a few minutes, some Japanese fans came as well. I talked to them (with the little Nihonggo I know and a bit of hand gestures) – and they were EXO-Ls. I was so excited and they were too – giggling and jumping in excitement. Of course one of the most important question that you need to ask when meeting a Kpop fan is “WHO’S YOUR BIAS?” And they were Xiumin’s and Chanyeol’s fans. They were lucky enough to watch OT12’s concert and said that I was sad because I only saw EXO-K once but my bias is Lay from M (they already saw my precious unicorn T_T). Anyhoo, we chit-chatted for a bit and said our goodbyes. It was a nice experience meeting international fans.

with Jp EXO-Ls :) Kawaii :)

After that I headed to CUBE and JYP Entertainment. But to my surprise, I passed by FNC Entertainment’s Building (they’re so near with each other!).

NEXT STOP: BIG HIT ENTERTAINMENT!

Seoul: Kpop-filled Trip (Part 2 – SM TOWN @ COEX Artium)

January 29, 2015 (A continuation) – I’ve already rested my feet and quenched my thirst at Kamong Café now I’m off to COEX Artium for the SM Town Exhibit. I’m really looking forward to this next destination as it was newly opened and of course it’s SM Entertainment (Two of my bias groups – EXO and SHINee – are from SM Entertainment so my feels were overflowing). The grand opening of the SM Town Place was last January 13, 2015 and I don’t know if it’ll be a permanent part of COEX or it’s just a temporary exhibition. So I didn’t pass up the chance to visit (who knows until when it’s going to be opened). By the way, there’s no entrance fee for this.

How to get there you ask? It’s pretty simple!

– Find your way to Samseong Station (Line 2; Green Line)

15

– Once you got off Samseong Station, Find EXIT 6

16

(Exit 6 of Samseong Station is closer to where SM TOWN Heaven is ;-)

In another corner, there are lots of large posters of the SM artists where you can skim through:

In addition, this floor has a photo booth where it’s as if you’re taking a picture with your favorite idol (whole body). Didn’t try it though because I was so tired already and I look like a waste. 🙂

That ends my SM Town @ COEX Artium trip. Hope you had fun with me and that you’ll pay it a visit someday while it’s still open.

Seoul: Kpop-filled Trip (Part 1)

January 29, 2015 – This is it! My Kpop adventure around Seoul starts. I roamed around alone ‘cause I’m the only Kpop fan among my cousins (I don’t want to drag them around coz I’ve got tons of places to go in my itinerary).

Speaking of itinerary this is my list for the day:

  • Kamong Café – Kai’s sister’s café
  • COEX Atrium – SM Town Land
  • Visit SM Entertainment, FNC Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, CUBE, and BigHit Entertainment
  • Shopping at Myeongdong

In my original itinerary I was planning to go to Viva Polo Restaurant (Chanyeol’s Mom’s restaurant) but I was too tired with all the walking that I did – the amount of walking was no joke. So if you’re planning to have one day of fan girling and comprising your itinerary in a day train yourself in walking (unless you have lots of money to pay for a cab haha).

First up: going to Kamong Café (owned by the sister of one of the EXO members, Kai.)

1

This recently opened café has been flooded by Kpop fans, most especially EXO-Ls because it’s connected with one of the members of EXO, Kai. Her older sister/noona has been gaining a lot of popularity these days by how she takes orders personally from her customers and fans would ask anything-under-the-sun questions about Kai and EXO.

I’ve read in one blog post about Kamong, the name is derived from KAi + MONGgu (but not yet confirmed if that really is the origin of the cafes name). You can really feel Kai’s Noona’s love for him and his dog. So cute.

How to get there?

– Make your way to GYODAE SUBWAY STATION/교대역 or SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION STATION (Green line) and go out at Exit 1.

Moon Hostel – Our home away from home

I’ve browsed through countless hostels around Seoul via the internet. And I accidentally stumbled upon Moon Hostel via Bookings.com. I read all the reviews about the place and I was smitten with the positive reviews they’ve got from their previous customers. Plus the photos of the place are superb. In the back of my mind maybe it was too good to be true. But with the blessings of my cousins, I booked the family room (accommodates 4 people) hoping that we didn’t made the wrong decision.

When we arrived at the hostel I was so happy because the building was the same with the photo that I saw on the internet: brightly colored building with a wooden flooring surrounding it. It’s as if it came out of a cartoon show. It is situated on a small street (maybe if we haven’t had the airport taxi service, we might’ve miss this. It’s not easily located- thank God for Kwon-ssi our taxi driver).

We were greeted by a lady staff (I wasn’t able to get her name because she was kind of in a hurry most of the time because she’s the only staff in this 5 storey building and she needs to tend to all the customers checked-in). And also we were greeted by their official mascot/pet in the hostel named 달이- dari or dal (in english: moon). She’s so cute and friendly with everybody.

I miss you so much Dari-yah!

I miss you so much Dari-yah!

The lady staff allowed us to have an early check-in (the official check-in time was supposed to be 2 p.m. but she gave us a consideration – which is kind of her) I paid her 476,000 won in cash or 18,963 pesos for 4 nights and 5 days and accommodates 4 people. So that makes 119,000 won or 4741 pesos per person. Good thing about bookings.com is that you don’t need a credit card to do your booking. You can pay in cash once you arrived and check-in on your hotel or hostel.

I was really shocked at how big the Family Room was. It is bigger than most of the condominium units in the Philippines. Then I was relieved and thought that we really made the right decision!

These are the photos that I took of our Room:

Our huge bathroom (though it’s size was not justified by my photo). We have a free use of shampoo and body wash (but we are decent enough to not take it home with us haha) and free use of towels which were replaced with a new one everyday.

These are some of their facilities (which we were able to utilize):

  •  Express check-in/check-out – Really fuss free
  •  Luggage storage – We stored our bags in a safe place and had an early check-out so we can still roam around Seoul in our remaining hours before our flight
  •  Concierge – they’ll help with anything you need: tour arrangement, locating places you wanted to go, arrangement of airport taxi service and etc. Plus, they can speak good English. You’ll not have a hard time communicating with them.
  •  Family room – where you can hang out with the other tenants
  •  Shared kitchen – where you can get free water, free coffee or tea and free use of their kitchen utensils
  •  Free Wi-Fi in all rooms – but in our bedroom specifically the WIFI signal is not that strong (that’s the only negative comment I have about Moon hostel)
  •  Heater/ AC – thank God for the heater

And the most highlighted feature of our hostel stay which is included when you book with Moon Hostel: FREE BREAKFAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Free food equals happiness. It’ll make your budget conscious pockets be at ease (breakfast in Korea can cost 3000 won or 119 Php for a cup of coffee and a bread). And you also need not to look for a place to eat during breakfast.

It’s a buffet breakfast set by the staff of the day: Scheduled breakfast buffet is at 8:00 a.m to 10 a.m. KST.

Chal meokesseumnida! Lovely breakfast buffet.

I’m a satisfied customer of Moon Hostel. If ever I’ll go back to Seoul I’ll definitely book the family room again. It feels like home to me now. I’m comfortable living there. Plus the area is safe and quiet that’s why I like it more.

If you want to do a booking in Moon Hostel you can search it at Agoda.com or Booking.com.

Moon Hostel is located at 149-4 Donggyo-Dong, Mapo-Gu, 121-816 Seoul, South Korea (few blocks away from Exit 3 of Hongdae Subway Station). You can reach them in these contact number: +821075233525. Or you can email them at moonhostel1@gmail.com. They answer queries right away.

Location Map of Moon Hostel: The Pink circle is the Exit 3 – go out of that exit and walk straight. On the 2nd street corner where a mini grocery store is located (well that’s the only landmark I could think of) turn right. Then on the first road, turn left. And on your right side you’ll able to locate the hostel. You’ll never miss it as it is the only colorful building there.

Final verdict: 4.5 stars out of 5 stars (Needs improvement on the internet connection. That’s all). It’s sooo clean as well 🙂 Plus points!

See you next time Moon hostel and Dari!

– Moon Hostel Review: the end –

1st day in Seoul

January 27,2015 – I was so excited for the trip that I woke up at 3 a.m. We went to the airport at 4 a.m. and arrived there at around 6 a.m. The airport was packed with people lining up on their designated check-in counters. We were hassled with the queue line to pay for our travel taxes, check in our baggage and for the immigration. Alas, we were able to board our plane safely (around 8 a.m.) and arrived at the well-known Incheon Airport (around quarter to 12:30 p.m. KST).

Everything was smooth sailing when we were at the Incheon Airport. It holds its name for the best airport in the world, being efficient and all. I’ll give it 5 out of 5 stars!

Waiting for our luggage (No idols were spotted T_T)

Waiting for our luggage (No idols were spotted T_T)

We were greeted by our Taxi service driver – Kwon-sii – even though we went out of our gate kind of late (because we exchanged our money first in the airport money changer to pay for our hostel and taxi service), he greeted us with a warm fatherly smile. (The Airport Taxi Service costs 70,000 for 4 people going to our Hostel).

We arrived at Moon Hostel at Hongdae at around 1 p.m. KST and the receptionist kindly allowed us to check-in earlier (The check-in time was supposed to be at 2 p.m.). Our room exceeded my expectation. I was so happy that I chose that hostel and that room (here’s a link of my Moon Hostel Review: https://wanderlustyeoja.wordpress.com/2015/02/21/moon-hostel-our-home-away-from-home/).

After we have already rested a bit and settled in our room, we headed out. It’s already 3 p.m. and we have yet to eat our lunch. We just walked from our hostel to the hot spot, Hongdae (from Moon Hostel we walked for 5 minutes to Exit 3 of Hongdae Subway Station and walked another 5 minutes towards Exit 9 which was nearer the restaurants and hangout places – we always go down the Subway Station to warm ourselves up ‘cause the coldness sometimes can be a bit harsh).

Since Hongdae has many restaurants, we didn’t have a hard time finding a place to eat. We just entered the first restaurant we saw (maybe because we are famished):

For 1 two-person sharing set (consisting of: 1 main dish, 2 cups of rice, 2 soda, and an unlimited access with radish kimchi and cabbage salad 2) it costs 8,500 won/ 338 Php – These are 2 sets in the picture

I forgot what this dish is called, but it is delicious! It’s a mix of chicken, tteokbokki (or rice cake), tidbits of peas and corn, and white noodles. It is very spicy even though I opted for number 2 or medium level of spiciness (the highest is number 3-I can imagine how hot that would be). So if you don’t like spicy food just choose number 1 or 0 jokingly.

This one is the Pork version but it taste just the same with the first dish but plated differently. Spring Onion was added to the dish but the ingredients with the first one is the same. This one costs around 9,000 Won/ 358 Php.

After eating we strolled around Hongdae and looked for a money changer to exchange the rest of our pocket money (Airport Money changers have low changing rates so it’s better to have your money be change in the city not the airport – but you can do so for a portion of your allowance so you can be able to pay for the transportation to your hostel and the hostel fee before checking in).

The streets of Hongdae are packed with youths walking around enjoying their time with their friends or boyfriend/girlfriend. It can be a bit crowded when it’s nearing night time.

In the busiest street of Hongdae (From Exit 9 of Hongdae Station walk straight until you reach the big road, turn left. Walk straight then after the 2 small streets, you will arrived at the road where I posed for the above photo --- or just follow the purple line I drew on the map) – Accessory shops, Make-up stores, side-street vendors selling hats, glasses, other stuff and street food vendors can be seen here. This is my most favorite street in Hongdae.

After we managed to get our dollars exchanged for won, we loaded our T-money cards in GS 25-a convenience store (T-money is credit-card like which you could use for transportation – e.g. taxi, subway, bus – and you could also use it when buying in various convenient stores – e.g. GS 25, 7-11). We put 25,000 Won or 995 Php on each of our cards. It’s more than enough for commuting. Actually I still got 8,000 won left in my card – I’ll use it on my next trip.

My T-money card or pop card that I purchased on my last Korean trip (April 2014). You can use this for how many years. And you can also buy other pop card designs (I saw EXO pop cards at Myeongdong last time. But too bad I wasn’t able to buy the Lay design).

The shopkeeper was an Ajumma (so just as I expected, I should talk to her in Korean. I said to her that I can only converse in little Korean that I know and she said that it’s okay and that we should come to Korea often so that I could learn more-whewwww!), she was warm and very welcoming.

I have a sort of disclaimer before having a conversation with the locals: I always say first “Hangeugoreul chogeum arayo, choesonghamnida – I only know little Korean, sorry/pardon me” then I’ll flash my sweet-sorry smile and after that they would be more understanding, welcoming and it’ll be sort of breaking the ice during our first meeting. But you can talk with them in English, it’ll still be acceptable (but sometimes expect that there’ll still be a language barrier. So try and try until they can understand you). Memorize some standard Korean greetings — it’ll take you a long way.

In our original itinerary we were supposed to have our outdoor ice skating. But since it was too cold and we were tired we decided to just go to Namdaemun Market (it is the oldest and largest traditional market in Korea located next to Namdaemun, “the Great South Gate”, which was the main Southern gate to the old city – Credits: google.com)

With my cousin at Namdaemun Market. You can find all sorts of stuff here: Traditional medicine, souvenirs, traditional clothes and etc. We managed to smile in spite of the cold wind. 2 Layers of clothing was really not enough.

When we can’t bare the coldness anymore (it was around negative 8 degrees Celcius according to accuweather.com), we decided to eat on one of the eatery tents famous in Korean dramas where you can drink soju until you get drunk and accidentally confess to your crush whom you are drinking with— well that’s what I thought of first when I saw the tent haha).

It’s just located in the center of a street in the market, with its food selection displayed in front and tables and chairs inside a make-shift transparent plastic tent with a heater inside to make their customers feel comfortable and warm.
